Keizer boasts convenient locale and low prices

Community Profile - Keizer, Oregon 97303

One of Oregon's newer cities, Keizer was formed in 1982 to stave off an attempt by the City of Salem to annex the then-unincorporated community's mix of suburbs and small farms. Fearing higher taxes and large-scale industrial development if the area were swallowed up by the state's capital, Keizer residents overwhelmingly voted to become an independent city.

Today, Keizer boasts a diverse economy and a diverse population of more than 34,000 residents, as well as a location that is uniquely situated for easy travel to all important points throughout the northern and central Willamette Valley. The city is west of Interstate 5 in Marion County, just minutes from both I-5 and the Salem Parkway. Yet, the city is far enough off the beaten path to enjoy quiet residential suburbs and moderate traffic. It is about 40 road miles due south of Portland.

Keizer residents enjoy plenty to do, with superb access to all of the hot spots in Salem, Keizer and Portland, plus bragging rights to a semi-professional baseball team, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, whose home stadium is in Keizer. The Northwest League team is affiliated with the San Francisco Giants.

Keizer's boundaries contain seven elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school, all operated by the Salem-Keizer School District. As of the 2004-05 school year, the city's McNary High School had 1,967 students and a student-teacher ratio of 24 to 1. According to figures from the Oregon Department of Education, 33.8 percent of students were eligible for free or reduced lunch and 30.1 percent were classified as minorities. The Oregon Department of Education reported in figures for the 2003-04 school year and the 2002-03 school year, respectively, that 6.4 percent of McNary's students spoke English as a second language and 9.2 percent dropped out by the fourth year.

As of the first quarter this year, the median price for a home in Keizer was $195,500, more than 20 percent below the median price for a home in the Portland metropolitan area. An average home sold in Keizer during the first quarter had 1,683 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on a lot of about 8,200 square feet. This average home sold in 80 days for a price of $207,059.
