Town and Fair Host
Community Profile -
Canby, Oregon 97013
Named for a famed Civil
War general murdered by indians in the late 1800s, Canby is a small,
working-class town surrounded by some of the richest farmland in Oregon. The town also is well-known as host to the annual Clackamas County Fair
& Rodeo, held there each year since 1907.
With
about 15,000 residents, Canby's history is more sleepy than storied; but
talk to most residents, and they'll tell you they like it that way. With only
one bowling alley and a few pubs for night life, it might seem there's not much
to do here. But locals know there's a lot more... a lot that's not so apparent
until you dig below the surface.
Families enjoy all the
sports opportunities for boys and girls, including soccer, football, baseball,
softball and more. Then there's the annual dahlia festival, the chili cook-off
and The Nutcracker ballet. The north end of town sports a top-notch country club, and the city is
dotted with quiet parks. Canby Community Park, alongside the Molalla River on
the west side of town, features a stocked pond that's perfect for kids who are
learning to fish. The park also has plentiful parking and picnic facilities.
Molalla River State Park
is just north of the town, at the confluence of the Willamette and Molalla
rivers. The park is open year-round and features picnic areas, walking and
hiking trails, a boat ramp and an off-leash area for dogs. The park is a quarter
mile upstream from the Canby Ferry, which connects the Canby area with rural
West Linn.
Canby's economy has
traditionally relied on farming, plus logging-related jobs in nearby forests.
The area's economy today is more diverse. Local employers include steel
fabricators, manufacturing businesses, local government, and a host of large and small
retailers, in addition to farms, commercial nurseries and a variety of other
occupations. Despite the diverse local economy, however, many residents work in
jobs in more populous communities about 15 to 25 minutes north in places like
Portland, Lake Oswego, Tigard and Clackamas.
Canby has four elementary schools operated by the
Canby School District for kindergarten thru 5th grade. The school district
has two middle schools, both inside city limits but serving students from around
town and surrounding rural areas like Whiskey Hill and Carus.
The district's Canby High School high school has about
1,700 students and a student-teacher ratio of 21 to 1. The Oregon Department of
Education reported that 8.1 percent of the high school's students dropped out
by their fourth year as of the 2006-07 school year.
Other notable information the Department of Education
reported about schools in Canby: 22.6 percent of students were eligible for free
or reduced lunch; 21 percent were classified as minorities; 6.9 percent
spoke English as a second language.
While
the regional and national softening in the housing market has not missed Canby,
the city continues to see a lot of residential building activity. Builders
produced a lot of upper-end homes during the last 10 years. In the current
market, they've been turning to more modestly-priced buildings to attract more
first-time buyers.
As of the third quarter this year, the median price
for a home with a Canby mailing address was $289,900, about 4 percent
above the median price for the entire Portland Metropolitan area (Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington
counties). Homes priced near the median averaged 12 years old with 1,675 square
feet comprised of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on a 0.18-acre lot. The average
market time for homes that sold near the median was about 9 weeks.
